Many clients ask me how I got into this work. My story starts with my own struggle with anxiety. When I was growing up, I wanted to be a professional musician. This was my first career aspiration. The problem was that I struggled with severe performance anxiety. It was so bad that I crumbled under even the mildest of pressure. My performances did not reflect the hours I spent practicing.
After struggling for many years, I finally discovered help through hypnotherapy. Over a couple of years, I learned to modify my mental and behavioral habits. This made my anxiety more manageable.
As I built my performance skills, I continued to get a better handle on anxiety. I eventually secured a three-year contract at Hyogo Performing Arts Center Orchestra, a full-time orchestra in Japan.
During my time in Japan, I routinely performed for crowds of 3,000+ people. Sometimes my performances were even nationally televised.
My ability to play for such large crowds without debilitating anxiety was a massive victory for me.
After my contract in Japan was up, I started to think about changing careers. I thought about how many people struggle with anxiety. I wanted to help others make the same kinds of changes that I did.
I did my initial training in hypnosis in 2015 and opened my practice the next year. For the first several years I focused on weight loss and habit change. I found my work satisfying, but I didn’t get the chance to help anyone with anxiety.
When the pandemic hit, people stopped asking for help with weight loss and habits altogether. Like for most people, this was a challenging time for me.
When the stay-at-home order lifted, there was a surge of people asking for help with anxiety. I had to quickly adjust to this new demand. I decided to pursue my master’s in counseling to become better trained in anxiety management. Now, I combine counseling and clinical hypnotherapy in my practice.
What keeps me going in this work is when I see my clients’ faces light up when they suddenly make a new discovery. I find so much joy in these experiences of shared learning and personal breakthroughs. I sincerely hope you’ll join me in your next endeavor for positive change.
Outside of work, my wife Xiaolei and I enjoy traveling, camping, hiking, swimming, fishing, and yoga.
Xiaolei’s parents and extended family live in Changchun, China. We visit regularly.
When I’m not working or spending time with Xiaolei, I enjoy woodworking. It’s fun to get in the shop and bring a new creation to life. Here are a few photos of Xiaolei and I as well as some of my projects.
