Hypnotherapy Pricing: 4 Ways to Consider the Value

Is hypnotherapy worth the cost?
Only you can accurately appraise the value of hypnotherapy. In deciding whether or not the cost of hypnotherapy is worth it to you, it’s important to consider several factors.
- What is anxiety (or other mental health challenges) costing you in: lost income, lost productivity, quality of relationships, quality of life, social functioning, and other areas? Remember that the cost of problems compound over time. If you have had the problem for 5 years, how much has it cost you during this time? How much more will it cost you in the next 5 years?
- Is the total cost of the problem more than the cost of (on average) 3-6 months of hypnotherapy? If it is, you might find that clinical hypnotherapy is more than worth it. If not, it may not be worth it to you at this time, and that’s OK.
- Aside from cost of the problem, are there any singular aspects of therapy that would be worth the cost? For example, if you could have more peace of mind, better focus, more mental clarity, more self-esteem, or feel more satisfied with your life, how much would you pay for that? Is that more than the cost of 3-6 months of hypnotherapy?
Consider hypnotherapy an investment in your mental health
- Investing in your mental health is almost always a good idea – While investing in your mental health isn’t guaranteed to pay off, it is more secure than many investments. If you devote the time to therapy, invest yourself fully in the process, and focus on learning more about yourself, chances are your investment will pay off with dividends!
- Mental health affects every aspect of your life – this includes your livelihood, your relationships, and your social life. Can you afford to not invest in your mental health?
- Problems with mental health tend to get worse over time – if mental health issues are costly now, how much more will they cost you if they get worse?
- The earlier you address problems, the less time you’ll spend in therapy – when you catch mental health problems early, you’ll spend less time in therapy and save money as a result.
- Therapy is not a permanent investment – While therapy can cost hundreds of dollars per month, your investment will (on average) only last for a few months. Yet, many of the benefits can stay with you for a lifetime.
Consider the advantages and disadvantages of hypnotherapy
- You’ll need to come up with your own advantages. But, here are some that I can think of: hypnotherapy is highly customized to you, hypnotherapy makes use of your internal resources to help you solve your own problems, it gives you a helpful therapeutic relationship, it uses evidence-based therapy, it can help you feel calmer and more centered, and listening to a recording of your session can help you benefit for days and weeks to come. (I could go on, but I’ll stop here)
- Disadvantages include: insurance does not often cover hypnotherapy, the cost can be higher than traditional therapy, hypnotherapy can require a significant investment of time, it can be challenging to find the best hypnotherapist for you, and you might not see instant results.
- Can you think of your own advantages and disadvantages? How do these factors play into your decision regarding hypnotherapy pricing?
Consider other Factors in hypnotherapy pricing
- Level of education – clinical hypnotherapists have advanced degrees which require years of study.
- Specialization – specialization in specific mental health challenges requires intensive training above and beyond graduate school.
- Type of therapy – hypnotherapy pricing varies according to the type of therapy. For example, ultra short-term approaches (3-5 sessions) tend to be the most expensive, while medium to longer-term approaches tend to be priced comparable to psychotherapy.
- The amount of work outside sessions – hypnotherapy pricing is also based on the work that hypnotherapists must do outside of session such as preparing treatment plans and doing progress notes. For every hour spent with a client, a hypnotherapist must spend an additional hour (on average) doing administrative work.
Alternatives to hypnotherapy
If you’ve decided you’re not ready now, that’s alright. Let’s talk about some alternatives in the meantime:
- Traditional therapy such as counseling
- Bibliotherapy – reading self-help books, articles, and blogs, and applying what you learn
- Self-therapy – self-hypnosis, meditation, thought-logs, or other self-directed techniques
- Coaching – life coaching or topic-specific coaching such as business
- Group counseling – either a support group or issue-specific group
- Talking to a friend – this doesn’t count as therapy, but it can be very supportive
- Spending time with loved ones – also not therapy, but it can be healing
